FAQ

Why is buying large diamonds (3 carats and above) different than buying other classes of diamonds?

Size Matters—because it makes everything matter more.  All diamonds are priced per carat.  This price per carat is multiplied by the total weight of the diamond to arrive at its total price.  Since large diamonds are rarer, they cost significantly more per carat.  In fact, this difference in carat price climbs quite dramatically as the total carat weight of the diamond goes up.  For instance, three one carat diamonds will cost much less than one, three carat diamond of the same cut, clarity and color grade.

Due to this pricing structure, a difference in even one grade (in color, clarity or cut) can alter the total price of a large diamond by thousands of dollars.   There are many subtleties when it comes to assessing a diamond’s real value.  It takes knowledge and experience to learn and discern all these subtleties.  For this reason, nothing can take the place of a trusted adviser to help you pick your large diamond.  Your expert will point out these subtleties to you, so you can understand why a particular diamond is priced the way it is.  You will then be able to choose which factors are important to you and pay only for those factors.

Why Premier Gem?

For over 50 years Premier Gem has built a reputation in the diamond industry for its expertise and knowledge of large diamonds.  Our diamonds don the Red Carpets and are sought-after for their outstanding quality and beauty.

Premier Gem is a Sightholder with the De Beer’s company, which means we are one of a select group of manufacturers in the US (less than ten) who receive rough diamonds directly from the De Beer’s mines and turn them into polished diamonds.  These diamonds then follow what is referred to in the industry, as the "diamond pipeline,” making their way to other wholesalers, diamond retailers and finally to you.  By using our concierge service, you will be buying your large diamond several steps higher up in the diamond pipeline.  In most cases, the closer to the mine you can buy your large diamond the better value you will receive.

What makes Premier Gem Concierge different?

The Premier Gem Concierge specializes in large diamonds (3 carats and above) and large diamond jewelry (studs, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, and rings).  By pairing you with a personal large diamond adviser, you will be guided through each step of the process.  Your questions and concerns will be addressed in an unhurried manner.  You will also have access to Premier Gem’s extensive, on-hand inventory and-in most cases-will be able to view multiple diamonds side-by-side.  The ability to compare different diamonds to one another is very important.  If you are purchasing several diamonds for a piece of jewelry, our selection will allow us to match these stones more readily and precisely.

Once you have chosen your diamond(s), we can, through our network of jewelers and designers, turn your diamond(s) into expertly-crafted classic jewelry or help you create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

With all the information available on the internet,  is it still valuable to have a trusted adviser?

It benefits certain sellers of diamonds to make us believe diamonds can be bought confidently like buying a commodity item. The fact is, every diamond is unique—diamonds are not commodities.  However, certain sellers imply that by familiarizing ourselves with the 4C’s, reading a certificate (and/or viewing a video) we will have all the information we need to accurately assess the true value of the diamond.  It is our opinion, the level of knowledge needed to know and discern these subtle differences is very high, taking many years of hands-on experience.

Aren't all certified diamonds equal?

It has been our experience this is not the case.  Different certifying laboratories have varying degrees of consistency when it comes to grading.  Large diamonds have an elevated price per carat.  Even a single grade difference in color, cut or clarity grade can influence the diamonds price by thousands of dollars.  We recommend you only buy large diamonds that have been graded using GIA, Forevermark or AGS.  Premier Gem Concierge utilizes only these grading laboratories.

Why is it so important to see multiple diamonds side-by-side?

Most diamonds seen alone are quite beautiful.  It is only by comparing different grades diamonds side-by-side that we can, as laypersons, visualize subtleties between them—and appreciate why they are priced differently.

Will I always be able to compare multiple diamonds side-by-side?

In most case, yes.  However, there are certain sizes or high grades of diamonds, which are very rare and sometimes even one-of-kind.  In such cases, it will not be possible to have multiple diamonds to compare side-by-side.  However, by even in these special cases, your diamond adviser will help illustrate the factors, which influence the price of those diamonds.
